Up [Cycled] With Kids – Motley Mode Mondays

Standard
Children’s Clothing Summer Girls Dress – Upcycled 4-5YR by BlumenKinder on Etsy.

I love dressing little people. I love it so much that the minute I learned that my siblings were expectant parents, I was out in the mall looking for those special little onesies and booties for the new special people coming into my life. As an Obstetrics Nurse, I have handled with care a lot of itty bitty new born babes, and given lots of first baths, and helped with first diaper changes [men are hilarious when faced with their first sticky meconium coated tushie]. I rarely get a chance to choose the clothes that these little ones wear home, so when my siblings had their little bundles, I was adamant that I be in charge of their “I’m going home in this outfit ‘Outifts’.”

One of the most wonderful things about having little people is giving them comfortable clothes that have lots of personality, that are made for play or special occasions, that are completely unique and even one-of-a-kind [OOAK]. You have to move fast, before they get into grade school and start demanding specific colours and styles, and before they hit their teens and just want to look like everyone else. It is a very small but special window, that time when you can have fun with your kids wardrobes, and it doesn’t even have to cost a lot of money. You just need to think outside of the ‘brand name’ box, so to speak.

Recycled T-Shirt Skirt, Shreddies – Size 7 by Tricycle Crafts on Etsy.

One fabulous way to be sure your kids are looking their one-of-a-kind best, is by nabbing some great handmade clothes, or better yet, handmade and Up-cycled clothing. What does that mean? Clothes made special just for your kiddo from what used to be other clothes, scraps of fabric and findings, and re-cycled or re-made into an entirely new and wonderful garment.  Not only are these clothes Eco-Friendly, they are also usually extremely comfortable made soft by previous use, and also unlikely to warp, shrink, or fade.  They can also be hella cute, and very funky, made to fit both personality and body type both.

Girl’s Pink Dress, 2T Toddler Clothing, Green Floral Print – Eco Friendly Upcycled ‘KARA’ by My Fair Maiden on Etsy.

This amazing selection of Up-cycled Kids Clothing was all found with a quick search on Etsy, my favorite place to find amazing goodies for one-of-a-kind kids.  There are high-cost brands that try to make their clothing look like it is all mix-and-match Up-cycled gold, I am thinking of brands like Oilily, but they will end up costing you their weight in gold too. Better to buy something that is actually the real deal that you can get for a steal, and have a real person, the seller and creator, that you can speak to about your child’s actual measurements and needs. You can often request custom items, or specify colours that you are looking for, it is like having a personal stylist work with you to make your fashion dreams come true. Almost like a fairy g-d mother, if you will, taking those tattered rags and turning them into Cinderella’s ball gown.

What Women Want In Bed – Motley Mode Mondays

Standard
Linen Pajama Pants With Cotton Eyelet Lace Trim by Sandmaiden Sleepwear, Etsy.

If one were to watch the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, it might seem perfectly natural for women to want to parade about in skimpy and barely there lingerie. Who wouldn’t want to look like those goddesses, with expertly applied make-up, complete with opalescent glitter and a set of wings. They really do resemble angels, good and naughty ones, but angels not of this earth.  Most fashion editorials that feature lingerie or sleepwear also seem to suggest that there is nothing that makes a woman feel more sexy and powerful than a killer pair of stilettos and some thigh-high stocking, a thong, and a demi-shelf bra with overflowing cups.  Models, with fiercely sexy bedroom eyes, looking somewhat far away, somehow almost like feral felines can be seen pawing across a satin sheeted bed, a chaise lounge, or a fur rug in front of a roaring fire.

Dottie Babydoll 1950s 1960s – Cotton Nightie Sleepwear Lounger by The Domestic Dame, Etsy.

I can totally understand it, I was there once upon a time. In my early twenties (a long time ago in the early 90s), I was the girl who dressed that sexy for my man. I wore french seamed stockings, garters, matching lingerie sets, fluttery silk bikini bloomers, the odd teddy, and even a well loved cat-suit. I was a curvy girl, and I liked the sexual charge I got from showing off those curves to an appreciative man.  I spent a lot of money on all that satin, lace, and silk, and it was fun to surprise my fella with a new outfit on me on special occasions, or just for fun.  But even at the time, I was very well aware that all that corsetry, underwire, and elastic – especially those tricky thigh high stockings and garters – were for fun, and hardly practical.

Pyjama Cami Top and Quarter Pants Set in Lady Blu Print by MaybeBlu, Etsy.

Looking back, I should have saved my money, I wore those sexy looks very few times for the relative expense of them, and they really don’t do for everyday wear.  I know I could never have actually relaxed in any of that stuff, it was not sleepwear, nor was it shape-wear, and it was appropriate for a very short time in my life.  No woman looks at a skimpy push-up bra, a thong, garters, and thigh-highs and thinks to herself “now this is one comfortable outfit, I shall sleep like a dream in this puppy!”

Pyjama “Anemone” by YUTA Shop, Etsy.

Bermondsey Lace and Cotton Sleeveless Peephole Nightie by Penny Face, Etsy.

So that brings me to my favorite Valentine’s Day related topic. The things men buy for women, and what they think the message they are sending is.  Normally I would never presume to address a post assuming that all couples are heterosexual, but if two women are buying for each other, they have a different idea of what each other wants, so for the sake of argument here, just go with me on this. If a man was to buy his lady a look such as those seen in a lingerie add or on the VS runway, he may think he is saying to her “you are as sexy as all of those girls and I want to see you looking like my very own goddess.” A very sweet thought indeed, and perhaps the most innocent of motivations for such a purchase, *wink wink, nudge nudge*. But men, be warned, when you buy a woman lingerie without her input you are likely to buy the wrong size or style, and you may make her feel like she is just not sexy enough as she is. Don’t kid yourself, it will go through her mind no matter how much you assure her she is perfect ‘just as she is’.

Amber Chic Maternity Hospital Gown/Dress – Amy Butler Fabric – Custom & Ready To Ship by CHIC MAMA BOUTIQUE, Etsy.

Elise Robe Silk Lingerie by Angela Friedman, Etsy.

Now, imagine that you give her a gift card to her favorite lingerie shop, and let her choose what she wants and needs. Do you think her purchases would be different from yours? You betcha, for sure! She may purchase a new selection of panties, a few new supportive bras to keep the ‘girls’ happy, and maybe even a new nightgown or robe.  What is the difference, you ask? Comfort! Say it with me now boys, a woman loves to be comfortable. I am not talking about her wearing your old T-shirts and a pair of sweat pants here, I am talking about something she can feel sexy in, that flatters her figure, but lets her express herself while being comfortable enough to cuddle, take care of the kids, get the morning paper off the lawn, and still feel like she can be your vixen in bed.  Yes, what women really want in bed is to be comfortable. That can encompass a wide range of styles, some very sexy indeed, other more modest, but all meant to fall softly over the body and let that most feminine, delicate, and smooth skin breathe.

Pyjama Gift Set Including Sleep Mask – “Hello Sailor” in Blue & White Stripe [Made To Order] by dollydripp, Etsy.

Asphalt Grey Sleep Set Pajamas With Wide Sleeves and Pants by Comfortissimo, Etsy.

So what can you buy your special lady, and this goes for both the fellas and the same-sex partners, to make her feel perfectly sexy and comfortable all at once, and be reasonably sure you have the perfect fit… lounge wear and/or sexy pajamas of course. If you want to make her feel fabulous, get her something she can wear on any given Sunday, watch the game with you, and still get in and out of in a flash for sexy times.

Sleepwear Jumpsuit by Poplin Homewear, Etsy.

Lingerie Nightgown – Cream Organic Cotton Sleepwear by Luva Huva, Etsy.

Searching out great comfortable PJs and lounge wear on Etsy is easy as pie, and you can get some really unique and lovely looks, with custom hand made touches of brilliance. You can pick your favorite colours, or hers, or go with a classic white linen nightgown with a little bit of sheer and a whole lot of sexy.  The point I am trying to make is that the head-to-toe matchy matchy lingerie set is so passe, unless you are planning your wedding night look, a “third date” seduction, or a Playboy Bunny Centerfold shoot.  It may be fun when you are twenty to play sex-goddess, but when you get past that little right of passage, you know that sexy is all about what is on the inside and what you can inspire in your partner by virtue of your confidence, your sense of humor, and your knowing just what ‘look’ will have them hauling you over their shoulder and rushing you into the bedroom on a Thursday night.

Nightshirt in Lady Blu Print by MaybeBlu, Etsy.

Mondays here at the Fab are all about fashion, the trends, the finds, the accessories, but it is also about being honest about what is really something that can be as simple and easy as a great set of pajamas that makes you feel wonderful, whether you are in a relationship or not. Ask any woman, the best part of her day is when she can finally take off that torture device known as a brassiere, the one with the elastic and wires that has been cutting into her tender flesh since she put it on that morning.

Sophy Romper Jumper Playsuit One Piece Loungerie [Made To Order] by Under The Root, Etsy.

Silk Pyjama Pants With Lace Trim and Elastic Drawstring, NOELLE Sleepwear Range by Sandmaiden Sleepwear, Etsy.

Please check out all of these fabulous looks I stumbled upon on the fabulous and ever changing Etsy, and think about the Valentine’s Day gifts you are planning for your sweetie, your kids, your pets, and your loved ones. Buy them something they would never expect, something practical and lovely at the same time, and believe me, you will be well appreciated for your efforts. Any of these featured items (with links and credits under every picture) would be perfect, and if it is too late for Valentine’s Day, there is always an anniversary, birthday, or holiday coming up that would suit just as nicely as an excuse to spoil your lover.

Nightgown – Valentine Red Supima Cotton Short Gown by Simple Pleasures Sleepwear, Etsy.

Low Rise Wide Leg Cotton Pajama Pant With Cropped Three Quarter Length Sleeve Cotton Knit Pajama Top by Serafina Dreams, Etsy.

No woman (or man for that matter) needs another heart-shaped box of chocolates, wilting bunch of over-priced roses or (*gag*) carnations, or g-d forbid a silly little teddy bear with a heart in it’s hands.  If they sell it at the local convenience store, it is not going to cut it. Instead plan a night of great takeaway food, get a few softly glowing unscented candles, a fabulous bottle of wine (with a real cork in it), and some comfortable clothing to start the night in. Believe me, by the end of the night, you will have forgotten all about that silly lingerie and just be thankful that you took my advice.

Flora Robe in Blue Ombre – Size Medium by Sabine + Sailor, Etsy.

Lingerie – Sarah Flirtatious Ruffled Top & Palazzo  by Simple Pleasures Sleepwear, Etsy.

You may disagree with me, so feel free to comment – I mean obviously someone out there is still buying that binding, lacey, ruffled, frou frou lingerie, it can be a lot of fun and very sexy indeed, there is lots of that to be found on Etsy as well, some from the same vendors I have highlighted here.  But I imagine that more women would admit to secretly desiring a slightly sexy yet comfortable piece of lounge wear, or a soft and light nightie, than a pair of cellulite pinching stay up thigh high stocking and stilettos… in fact, I would bet my blog on it. Have a fabulous Valentine’s Day everyone!

Hot Couture for Kids – Motley Mode Mondays

Standard
Madras, Chevron and Stripe Peasant Dress, with Japanese Import Echino Print Skirt, Sizes 12m – 8 by Kiki Fluhr, The Measure on Etsy. $45.00 USD.
I love to see children dressed in clothes that are special and unique, stylish, yet still very much appropriate for their age. I don’t think that children need to look like small versions of adults at formal events, they still need to look like kids. I am a fan of colour on kids, I love when clothes have a clattering mix of prints and textiles. I appreciate small details that make children’s clothing beautiful, and I admire the skill and creative talent of designers who specialize in kids “Couture”.
Girls Dress. Black and White Dress with White Polka Dots in Cotton Lycra Jersey Knit (Girls Sizes 6-10) by Teeny Bunny on Etsy. $78.00 USD.
Boy’s Suspender Outfit – Black Pin Stripe Outfit – Bow Tie, Cuffed Pants, and Suspenders by Rebecca Wilding, Apple & Ivy on Etsy. $46.00 USD.
Spring Tweed Cowl Neck Dress by My Sweet Emma on Etsy. $35.00 USD.

I know there is an official definition of Couture, set forth by the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie de Paris no less.  It goes something like this;

Couture refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing. Haute Couture is made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable seamstresses, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.

Girls Dress – Round Shaped Pattern Stripe Print – Sizes 2-3, 4-5, 7-8, 9-10 years by Sarit Lalae Nukile, Nukile on Etsy. $45.00 USD.
Perfect Pink And Brown Paris Party Dress by Kimberly Critel, Simplicity Couture on Etsy. $34.00 USD.
Personalized Navy Blue Tie T-Shirt – Pick Print, Name, Age, Initials, Phrase – 12m – 8 by Rosie, We Choose Joy on Etsy. $25.50 USD.
Girls Dress Children Clothing Pink Cream & Brown – 12-18, 18-24, 2T/3T, 4T/5T + by Donna Ware, Zoe Girl Designs on Etsy. $38.00 USD.

To me, Couture means that a garment is an exclusive design of the creator in question, it involves hand-made elements, and it may well be one-of-a-kind [OOAK]. It is usually ordered to suit the size requirement of the customer, and it is made to order.

Spring Dress Coat – Available Sizes 6 Months to 4T (Girls Sizes 5-14 Available) by Brookie’s Closet on Etsy. $65.00 USD.
New Limited Chic Cocktail Swing Coat – Charcoal Black [12/18, 2/3T, 4/5T] Ready To Ship Jacket by Heidi And Finn Studio on Etsy. $45.00 USD.
Hobbit Hoodie. Warm Elf Style Hoodie, Handmade, Cosy Hobbit Outfit for Boys by Agnese Vajevska, Hobbit Friendly on Etsy. $54.00 USD.
Girls PiXiE COATS (Deposit Only). “Over The Rainbow” Custom Made Sizes T2 – 8. Upcycled Sweater Couture by Sweet And Blue on Etsy. $29.00 USD.

Today’s fashion centered Monday post is a sample of some of the most lovely, quirky, and fabulous children’s fashions to be found on Etsy. This is as usual, just a minute sampling of the fashion available on Etsy, but these are the items that caught my eye, and my heart. These are garments I would love to see my three nieces, aged 7, 9, and 14  or young nephew, age 6, wearing.  The items for younger children are simply favorites that I had to share because you may have younger children in your lives that you love to dress.

The Juliette Dress by Corinna Couture. Sizes 6 mos to 6 yrs. [7-8 for Additional Fee] by Corinna Hyde, Corinna Couture on Etsy. $58.00 USD.
Neck Tie for Boys – Infant/Toddler/Child – Four for 46.00 – Choose Your Patterns & Colors by Ashley Hollis and Mary Tiede, Two Sisters Originals on Etsy. $46.00 USD.
No FUSS Black Satin Slip Dresses with IVORY Tulle Overlay, Comes With Couture Bow Kit in Black by Fairy Wonderful on Etsy. $79.95 USD.

Pink and Black Twirly Girl Party Dress – Sizes 7, 8, 10, and 12 by Best Little Dress/Mapletree 2000 on Etsy. $48.00.

Maybe you are shopping for an upcoming occasion or holiday, such as Easter or Passover, or perhaps you have a family photograph planned and want to dress the kids in something special that will be a memory forever.  If there is a Wedding in the future, select one of these amazing designs over what the fashion industry assumes little girls and guys want to wear.  Whatever your needs, you can find something appropriate from among the many Etsy fashion designers, but the act of ‘window shopping’ on a blog may just help you make the leap out of the “same-old same-old” children’s wear staples, and push you into a place where you can see children’s clothing as something more than merely functional.

The Avery Wrap Top and Pant SET – Corinna Couture Spring 2012 by Corinna Hyde, Corinna Couture on Etsy. $65.00 USD.
NEW Children’s Boys Toddler Snap Shirt – L/S Blue by Feanna Otta, Kait Emerson Designs on Etsy. $38.00 USD.
Rose Bloomer Set with White Lace – Size 4 by Linda Carman, Linda Marie Stitchery on Etsy. $49.95 USD.

Innocent Crush Lace Ruffled Dress [Matching Bloomers Sold Separately, $39.00] by My Sweet Emma on Etsy. $70.00 USD.

When I look at these clothes, my youngest sister comes to mind. Her nine year old daughter is always impeccably dressed and dare I say “styled”. Right now she is learning classical ballet from a very strict Russian ballet teacher and happily focused on her skiing each weekend which is her passion (she races, downhill). My youngest sister, a fashionable gal herself,  always pays attention to what her daughter is wearing, and she has always taken care to select clothing that is really unique and lovely. I know that my niece would look amazing in any of these looks, and so would most children.

Flower Girl Tea Party Dress – Custom by Amanda Pillow, Amanda Rose Bridal on Etsy. $100.00 USD.
Moody Vintage Floral And Red Stripe Peasant Dress, with Ann Maria Horner Print Skirt, Sizes 12m – 8 by Kiki Fluhr, The Measure on Etsy. $48.00 USD.

Oh Nautical Baby One Shoulder Dress [Sizes 12m – 7] by Christina, Little Wellies on Etsy. $39.95 on Etsy
TuTu Dress in Black Polka Dot, Pink Tulle Skirt for Baby, Toddler, or Girl by Lover Dovers Clothing on Etsy. $44.00 USD.

I choose to include the prices of these items, along with the usual title and shop link, because I want you to see the amazing quality of clothing you can get for your money.  It certainly is far more reasonably priced than any kiddy boutique I have ever been in, and the plus here is that many of these sellers will do the alterations you require based on your child’s specific measurement.  You can actually ask questions about the fabric, the fit, the sizing, and the options with these clothes.  There is no rushing to the mall or the dressing room, you can take a child’s measurement when they are in the best mood for it, and then get them the perfect outfit when you are in the best mood for it. So forget Haute Couture, and go for these Hot Couture looks for the kids in your life.

Blue and Brown Ribbon Trimmed Designer Tu Tu Set  by Angela, Npictures Boutique on Etsy. $125.00 USD.
Boys Vintage Inspired Outfit from The Vintage Carnival Collection by Vintage Child Modern by Brianne, Fleur and Dot on Etsy. $185.00 USD.

Mad About These Hatters – Motley Mode Mondays

Standard
Winter Top Hat, Navy Blue by Olivia Royale.

You can try to deny it, but I know the truth. In some manner or other, you watched the Royal Wedding coverage this past year. You wanted to see the dress that Kate wore, you wanted to see the pomp and circumstance, and if you are anything like me, you wanted to see those fascinating hats. Living in Canada, most people wear hats for practicality as opposed to fashion. When it gets cold outside, we pull on those wooly wonders and cover our ears. We make sure the kids have the sun hats they need at camp, and we would never let our babes be out in sun without a bonnet.  But you have to admit it, there is nothing so beautiful as a scene stealing hat. Purely fanciful, cheeky and full of fun, or classic and elegant, hats are more than just practical. It’s time we brought the hat back into the fashion spotlight. Where to start? Well… Etsy of course!

Movie stars are starting to catch on, and hats are becoming red carpet staples for many. Everyone remembers Sarah Jessica Parker at the premiere for Sex And The City, the movie. Parker’s green hued acorn shaped hat with a tower of tall feathers was stunning and sensational. Sexy songbird Rihanna loves her hats too. Lady Gaga is perhaps the most daring when it comes to hats, and just about everything else fashion-wise, even if you aren’t a fan of her music, you have to admit she knows how to cause a stir with a hat. The Brits wear their hats often and well, why are we letting them have all the fabulous fun?

Blue Feather Cocktail Hat by Alice Hart, Alice Hart Couture Millinery.
Ivory Mini Top Hat with Burgundy and Green Feathers by M. Carriere, Mielcoeur Accessories.

Women cling to their Little Black Dress [LBD] as a party-going staples. We have our favorites, and we wear them as often as we can get away with, but imagine wearing a great hat with that same-old LBD. Not only will people be focused on that hat, but you have instantly added a whole lot of personality and what’s more, a great conversations starter.

Men have good reason to embrace a stylish hat as well. Think of the most iconic men in film, did they have a signature hat? Where would Humphrey Bogart be without that dashing Fedora. Harrison Ford was devastatingly handsome as Indiana Jones, but we all know that it was that hat that made him beyond cool. Pop sensation Will.I.Am is rarely seen without his hats. Johnny Depp may have played The Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland, but he is rarely seen without one when out and about town, and there is nothing crazy about that at all. Brad Pitt and Justin Timberlake are known for their flat caps and newsboy styles.

So lets celebrate the art of the Milliner this Monday. This amazing selection of one-of-a-kind [OOAK] hand-made hats are all available on Etsy, and there are even some fabulous looks for kids that will make your heart flutter.

OK girls, it’s time to fess up, how many of you have harbored dreams of Roller Derby stardom? I know I have. There is something so bad-ass about the women who Whip It. There seem fearless, fierce, and wild. At one time or another we have all wished we had a place to go, a secret life, where we were strong and powerful, where we had the camaraderie of kindred spirits, where we could let off some steam. We may never actually have the guts to do it, but we can all dream of a night of Roller Derby action. If you haven’t seen it, you need to have a girl’s night where you order up Drew Barrymore’s Whip It (2009) on your Netflix, and live vicariously. I promise you will love it, Ellen Page is brilliant and it is a girl-power fest.

Motley Mode Mondays – Get Tied To These Apron Strings

Standard

One of the reasons I love holidays at my parents home, is that my mother always cooks up a storm. She is a great cook, a wonderful homemaker, and she always wears an apron. You know the one I mean, the one that closely resembles something bought in a hardware store except is is made out of some floral chintz. It’s either that, or one with a kitschy slogan emblazoned across her bosoms, neither one is particularly flattering in front of company. They do what they are intended and this past October 31st, one pulled double-duty as a six-year-old’s “cape” as he went out for Halloween as Harry Potter. My mother wears them, my grandmother always wore them, we played dress-up in them as little girls. I myself haven’t worn an apron since I was in Culinary School, and that was entirely functional and frankly a confining fashion don’t.

Am I the only one of my generation that has dropped the “Apron Strings”? I suspect I am not, but what if an apron was something more than functional. What if it was beautiful, retro chic, cute, colourful, heck… even sexy? Well for today’s Fashion Focused post, I present the most delightful of Aprons, the most fabulous of kitchen couture, and the ones you are going to want to snap up in time to be able to wear them to serve up that Valentine’s Dinner for your sweetie(s). Get a gander at these Fab looks that will definitely have them “kissing the cooks“.

Thanks for indulging me with this picture laden post, but I think most people need to see the front and the back of an Apron to get an idea of how functional it is, and it’s nice to see so many creators didn’t forget to add special details on all sides of these garments. From pockets and frills, to reversible and lined apron’s, this showcase is a great runway to launch you off to the Etsy Shops in question to get a better look.

Mens Apron / Dark Navy Denim Plaid by Erin McIntosh, Dear Edna on Etsy.

I want to add a few more Aprons to this already heavy post, but I think they are important ones. Men cook too and have just as much use, if not more, for a handsome Apron, so I have a great menswear look on deck. In addition, I think our littlest chef’s are not only adorable in Apron’s, but they can certainly use something to guard their party clothes from splashes and stains. This really is a little bit of playing dress-up for everyone, adults included. As always, this is just a small sample of available options, styles, colours, and prints available, and aprons that I personally like for various reasons. You are practically guaranteed to find the apron of your dreams at one of these Etsy Shops. So go ahead and “Get Tied To These Apron Strings“.
