French Kiss Kiss – Sweetness Sundays

French Macarons Are A Sweet Trend, 4/6/2010. Photo Credit: Tony Bock/Toronto Star

In recent years, there is one sweet patisserie treat that is not only as beautiful to look at as it is to savor, and is also endlessly suitable to personalization. It synonymous with the luxurious life and real culinary credentials, simultaneously attaining an almost iconic image as well as a modern gustatory revolution. The French Macaron is just such a creation, with a deep rooted history, and a modern enthusiastic following at the same time. As early as 2010, they started popping up in my Toronto area bakeshops as something you could pick up on any given shop day.

This is no easy feat, particularly for what is, when you come right down to it, a sandwich biscuit.  I somehow can’t imagine an Oreo cookie starting such a revolution on the European Continent as the Macaron has in the United States and Canada both, as of late.

There is just something so fragile and special about a Macaron that cannot be mass produced. It is this fragility, the candy like colours, and the endless combinations that make up the lure of the Macaron. Movies like Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst have given a new spotlight to the over-the-top decadence and girly prettiness of this petite confection.

If you look at a well made French Macaron, not to be confused with what North Americans call a Macaroon [a moist coconut based drop cookie], you will see the subtle beauty of the treat.  Put together from two smoothly topped baked round wafers, with a crumbled edge called the foot, these pieces share many of the characteristics of a meringue.  Powdered sugar, egg whites, and ground almonds make up the basic recipe, but endless flavor concentrates and colorings make them absolutely breathtaking to see.

The exterior wafers of the Macaron have a natural opalescent shimmer over the surface, almost evoking images of fairy wings, and they are soft and moist and melt in the mouth in the most delicate of ways.  I rather predict that the cup-cake craze, while not over, will give way to the pleasures of the Macaron very soon. Similar to cupcakes, the filling, or ‘icing’ between the two wafers can take many forms.  It can be a delicious butter-cream, jam or preserves, or ganache filling.

While traditional flavors are vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry combinations, cutting edge pastry chefs are busy inventing brilliant alternative flavors from the familiarity of lemons to the sublime Matcha green tea flavorings. Whether flavoring the wafers or the filling, they are served in a sandwich mode, with two rounded smooth ‘caps’ with the foot facing the filling, and a thin but ample layer of filling piped or spread in between.

The popularity of the French Macaron in North America is blossoming, and confectionery shops have windows full of towers of these jewel like biscuits and special long narrow boxes with ribbons, ready for Valentine’s day sales.  French Macaron are a much sexier and cleaner on the fingers ‘eat’ than an icing covered giant cupcake, with just 88 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, and 11 grams of carbohydrate for each delicate and sweet sandwich.  The average small specialty cupcake has 178 calories, 5.3 grams of fat, and a whopping 32.5 grams of carbohydrate in all that over-sweet sticky goodness.

Macarons have reached epic popularity in France, being offered on the menu at McDonald’s restaurants in that country.  This new status of the french treat is making waves in the fashion world, as well as art, sculpture, and crafting.  Pastel colours are all over the runways, and the garments seem to look as delicious and light as the cookie itself.  There are heaps of photographs of French Macarons, in wild and enticing colours, as well as ‘fake’ props for your home, soaps, toys, and accessories.

So much of what we eat, and crave, has to do with what it looks like.  Seeing the sheer volume of jewelry, trinkets, dollhouse sized treats, and non-edibles inspired by the lovely French Macaron, you can see that people have fallen in love with this iconic ‘cookie’, and though they may be a bit complicated for the baking novice to master, they are actually not impossible to make right at home. It takes a bit of practice with the piping bag to get the exterior meringues to shape up perfectly and match in size, but then you have the fun of eating all your ‘mistakes’, which may be the best part.

So grab a great recipe for a French Macaron from a cookbook or the internet, flavor it any way you like, be it pomegranate and orange, or espresso and match tea, and whip up a batch of sweet French Kisses for your loved ones this Valentine’s Day. Now if I can just sort out a vegan version of this amazing treat. That would be truly fabulous my darlings!

Small Art Big Love – Found On A Friday

Standard
“Jake The Tortoise” Hand Sewn Brooch, Felt Badge, Tortoise Pin by Jess Quinn.

Sometimes in my travels I stumble upon something that is so many wonderful things in one shop that I can’t decide upon which day of the week to feature it. That is why I am thankful for Fridays, where anything goes here on the Fab.  When I cam across the Etsy Shop of Jess Quinn, I knew the only place to do her amazing stash justice was to place it in a Friday feature.  Simply called Small Art, Jess’s shop is full of the most fabulous items, from paper goods, cloth dolls, clay creations, felt accessories, original oil paintings, and so much more. If this is Quinn’s idea of ‘small’, I can’t imagine what she considers to be ‘large’. With almost 150 items in her Etsy Shop, I would say there is nothing small about the work of Jess Quinn at all.

The Woodsman – Art Doll, Soft Sculpture by Jess Quinn.
Alphabet Fairy – Wood Art Doll – Beatrice by Jess Quinn.
“Higgety Pop” Vintage Altered Art Doll by Jess Quinn.

What is really special about Jess’s Shop is the way she presents her fabulous items.  The photos are precious and engaging, and they make you want to look closer.  She will create a whole tableau of items around her dolls, brooches, and other items, often using dollhouse furniture or toys that not only add a sense of playful whimsy, but also indicate the scale of items for sale.

Easter Bunny Hair Band/Fascinator – Pink Felt Bunny Rabbit by Jess Quinn.
Spring Bib Necklace, Fabric Pink Clown – Blue Pom Poms – Embroidered Textile by Jess Quinn.
Little Indian Head Dress, Dressing Up, Head Band – Native American by Jess Quinn.

The little [ and big ] pops of colour against a white background are perfectly styled. Her accessories are often worn by adorable kiddies with naturally silly smiles or honest pouts, and her paper goods and artwork are presented in the perfect lighting to make them appear as magical as you know that they are.

“Isabelle” Girl In A Yellow Dress – Illustrated Greeting Card by Jess Quinn.
“Girl With Apples” Illustrated Greeting Card, Printed Drawing, Black & White by Jess Quinn.
“Knitting Queen” Illustrated Greetings Card, Printed Drawing by Jess Quinn.

Items in Jess Quinn‘s shop range in price from less than $2.00 USD to just over $200.00 USD. That means there is something  for every budget and every taste.  Shipping from Bristol, England in the UK, shipping cost are excessively reasonable. The cards are frame-able art, the dolls enchanting, the brooches would make brilliant gifts, and the accessories are instant one-of-a-kind treasures.

“Bitsy Boo” Fabric Art Doll, Red Felt, Little Girl, Linen Cloth Doll by Jess Quinn.
“Miko & Molly” Hanging Fabric Decoration, Printed Cotton Sweethearts, Vintage Silk by Jess Quinn.
Cloth Art Doll, Soft Sculpture, Textile, Square Clown Blue by Jess Quinn.

Jess takes great care when describing her items, often including little anecdotes about their inspirations, the materials used, and the dimension of the items.  All essential information when you are buying handmade goods online. I have to commend her on her presentation style, her shop feels intimate and you get the distinct impression that you are getting a peek ‘behind the curtain’.

“Miss Bird” Clay Brooch, Circus Pin – Hand Painted Small Sculpture by Jess Quinn.
Clown Art Doll, Clay – Textile, Felt Fabric, Hand Painted by Jess Quinn.
Clay Brooch, Wearable Art, Hand Painted Pin – Green, Lettuce by Jess Quinn.

Jess has divided her shop into specific categories of items, so I decided to present a few of examples of her work that reside under each category heading so you can get a good idea of the range of whimsical items she offers.  As always, I showcase items that tend to appeal to my taste, but there is so much more to be discovered in Jess’s Small Art shop. Jess herself calls her items Unique Artworks and Original Gifts, I would stress the unique, I haven’t seen anything quite so fantastically outside of the box in my recent travels.

“Clown Miko” Felt Brooch, Pillow Pin Portrait, Wearable Art by Jess Quinn.
“Bunnyhoot” Small Art Doll, Purple Felt Brooch, Plush Forest Creature by Jess Quinn.
“Matilda Mouse” Felt Brooch – White Mouse Bow Tie Pin, Printed Drawing by Jess Quinn.

You really must take a closer look at the work of this Art School graduate and mother of three, who says she comes from a family of ‘makers’. I rather like that statement, I can identify with it completely. For more information on her captivating work, you can also swing by her Blog and check out what Jess is currently up to. You might also like to know that Jess is offering a “Free Shipping” code until March 11th, 2012 and that currently she is having a small Spring Clean Sale on selected items in her shop, as if you needed more reason to head over and check it out. It may be Small Art, but I have big love for it. [In particular, that “Jake The Tortoise” Brooch at the top of the post, how incredibly sweet it is!]

Making Faces – Found On A Friday

Standard
ONE 28″x20″ Mixed Media Print, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.

Friday’s are the day that I don’t have to worry about any categories, I can simply showcase something wonderful. That is a blessing and a curse sometimes. A blessing because it removes any constraints on the fabulous finds I get to introduce, a curse because I am spoiled for choice.  It has become apparent to me that I like a heck of a lot of things, and so it comes down to choosing an artist to feature that doesn’t “fit” into one of the themes days here at the Fab. That means that mt Fridays are usually reserved for Artist that have a unique and original flair that somehow speaks to me. Today’s featured artist is one of those.

Every You Every Me – Mixed Media 15/100, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.
Angel – Mixed Media 12/100, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy

It has become apparent to me that the original art that seems to grab me full on from the jump is often art that features human [or humanoid] faces. I don’t know why, but when I see a face, I see emotion, and it often connects with me on a very deep level. I have presented several artists that do a sort of ‘abstract portraiture’ before, and try as I might to pass them by in search of something else to showcase, I keep coming back to the same work over and over again. Vincenzo Rizzo is one of those artist who works just grabs me. I will be doing a random search of artwork on Etsy, or even just searching the whole of the newest listings pages, and every time I see one of Vincenzo’s paintings, I click through to look at it closer. I often don’t even realize it is yet another of Rizzo’s amazing creations until I get to the image listing, at which point I have that “well Duh!” moment, the moment where I realize that it is no wonder I like it so well. Vincenzo Rizzo is a master of capturing faces that captivate me.

Canada 10/100 Limited Edition Mixed Media, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.
Drinking My Tears – Mixed Media 14/100, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.

Vincenzo’s Etsy Shop is chock full of the most amazing mixed media prints and original paintings, and they are all of them priced well within the grasp of an collector.  Prints are almost always limited to an edition of 100 copies, and most are available for purchase at just $10.00 USD.  Canvas mounted prints run higher, but they are large in scale and ready to hang. You can bring home an amazingly high quality print on canvas, mounted on wood, and signed and dated by the artist, for $220.00 USD. Many original works are also available, these range in price from the ridiculously affordable $10.00 USD price point.

Agata – Mixed Media – 11/100, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.
Feeling The Wave – 4/100 – Mixed Media, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.

You may well recognize some of these faces, as I do, as some of the most beautiful models to grace the pages of fashion magazines, to portraits of some of the most iconic celebrities.  Many people may attempt to do portraits of famous faces, but Vincenzo does it with such skill that you often feel that you know who you are looking at in these images, you just can’t figure out how you know them. Rizzo’s combination of these lovely faces and splashes of colour, script, or other mixed media elements are masterful. The range of colours and materials used makes them so appealing, and with such an accessible price, you can bring these lovely limited edition prints or originals into your home with very little hesitation.  I simply love the way Vincenzo makes faces.

LoVe BomB – 49/100 Mixed Media, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.
Watercolor’s Spirit // Limited Edition 32/100, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.

Rizzo’s art would look stunning in a traditional mat and frame, or in a floating frame of glass.  The sizes make them very easy to frame for a reasonable price, so they would all make wonderful gifts as well.  I could see them in a gallery like collection, featured on the walls of a hip hair salon or spa, or in the bedroom of that budding Fashionista teen you know so well. A group of these prints would work in just about any room that needs some colour and personality.

NERONE – miXedMedia 12/100, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.
Wings Of Stone – 34/100 – Mixed Media, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.

This is just a small selection of Vincenzo’s works available on Etsy, so please follow the links to Rizzo’s Etsy Storeand see which works speak to you personally.  While I mainly presented a sample of portraits, Vincenzo also does some fantastic nudes and humorous images featuring juxtaposed vehicles, animals, and other artistic elements.  I particularly love the whimsy of some of the original works done on pages of Latin dictionary pages, they are simply fantastic.

3D O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L. Hand Painting Mixed Media on Page of Antique Italian Vocabulary of the Early 1900’s Original Unique Artwork, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.

Make sure you take a trip over to Etsy this weekend, a long weekend for us Canadians, and don’t forget to visit Vincenzo Rizzo’s Etsy Store in your travels. You will not be disappointed, and it is a great place to start if you are an Etsy ‘virgin’, as may be the case.  Don’t be afraid, Etsy may seem like a daunting place, there is so much to look at and explore, but there is truly something for every taste and living space, and the images presented are almost universally lovely and appealing.

UV – Mixed Media 49/100, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.
Gucci 12 of 100 Limited Edition, ART by Vincenzo Rizzo on Etsy.

You may think of Etsy as akin to eBay in some respects, but it is far more focused on handmade, one of a kind, and antique goods.  I find eBay to be impossibly over-run with what often seems to be ‘crap’, there seems to be no standard of presentation or attention to detail. Etsy provides a much better shopping experience, and there is a true community feel to the site. Have a lovely weekend and may you find a whole lot of fabulous in your foraging attempts.

We Should All Have A Dream – Time Travel Thursdays

Fine Art Print – “Hidden Gems” Ballerina and Saxophone – 5×7 by Aesha Ash, Swan Dreams – A Shop With A Cause on Etsy.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
– Martin Luther King, Jr.

In February, the United States and Canada share a common observance, a rare thing between our two countries, but a welcome one particularly in this case. February is Black History Month, and it is a time to not just look to the past to find astonishing heroes and heroines that have changed the world as we know it, but a time to assess where we now sit in relation to our goals for understanding and harmony between all persons. This post will feature images of items available right now on Etsy that are particularly evocative as we look at Black History Month, and remember our shared history, and equally importantly, our shared future, for our children, and for our children’s children.

Black Americana – Cotton Bale, Memphis – Tupelo, Postmark – Vintage Postcard at Muse of Memorabilia on Etsy.

Black History Month is a time to recognize that we share more with our fellow man than we can possibly imagine, and that the differences are the things that make us unique and special in this world.  It was Edmund Burke who first said, “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” Burke, a British Statesman and Philosopher, may have said it in the 1700s, but it is just as true today as it ever was.  Ignoring our history, weather it be triumphant or traumatic, only serves to allow us to repeat our mistakes in ignorance. When you know better, you do better. This month’s celebrations are not about placing blame on any person or persons, they are about the strength of the human spirit to survive the most bleak of circumstances, and to show us that we are all capable of great acts of bravery when push comes to shove.

Rosa Parks Print 11×17 – Famous Seniors by Garrick, Senioritis on Etsy.
Carter G. Woodson Postage Stamps – Black History Month at Vintage by Cassandra on Etsy.

I am not black, I am not a visible minority, unless you consider being female as a minority, statistically it is not.  I consider myself instead an “Invisible Minority”. I am a Jewish woman, and though I am not orthodox in my observances, I do self identify as a Jew. That means that people who meet me in my professional life often assume I am not Jewish.  I have been present when people I consider to be friends have used derogatory terms, even absent-mindedly, in reference to the Jewish people. I was once discussing a shopping trip with a group of fellow nurses when a male nurse over 15 years my senior, stated, “How did you get a deal like that? Did you Jew them down?”

Vintage 1930’s Mammie Doll – Handmade Toaster Cover at Firegypsy Vintage on Etsy.
Vintage Black Americana Print – Antique “Mammy” and “Sambo” Illustration & Poem at Tuppence Ha’penny on Etsy.

It is a very difficult experience to explain if you have never been a party to it. It is a bit like being slapped in the face by an invisible hand.  It stings, but it goes deeper, it wounds something inside you.  When you realize that this type of thinking is usually something learned early in life from one’s parents or peers, that it takes generations to change the thinking behind it, and that the subsequent slur is often uttered without any conscious intent to wound. I can say that I myself, until that day, had not really examined my own use of certain terms. That single experience was so shocking to me, so life altering, that I cannot help but shudder to imagine the experience of those who face open hostility and violence based on their religion or skin colour, their heritage, sexuality, or race.

Mother To Son by Langston Hughes – Card by Jerise on Etsy.
Boys in White – 8×10 – Black And White Photograph by Nate Ivey, Neurorocker – Crescent City Connection on Etsy.

When I was a child trading toys with my little friends, we used the term “Indian Giver” quite freely, meant as the ultimate put down for those who took back what they had traded.  My mother pointed out to me at a young age that it was a hateful and ignorant thing to say, and I am grateful to her for it. I know that into my early twenties I was using the term “Gyped” to describe a situation where I felt I had been cheated out of money. It was only after realizing that the term actually referred to a Gypsy transaction, and in light of my own experience with a similar term involving my heritage, that I eradicated the term from my vocabulary. It now brings a great deal of shame to my heart to know that I may have offended someone with my thoughtless and ignorant remarks.

1965 Fun With Our Friends – Classic Dick and Jane Primer – Ethnic Edition 1st Grade at Bookmonster on Etsy.
Black History Month // 1970s ABC Flashcard Letters Post Cards at Crab Apple Design on Etsy. Optional Stitching Into A Banner by Melissa Stewart.

I am in no way a student of Black History, I have learned what I know from reading books, watching television documentaries, and through my general education.  I wish I was able to give you a concise history of Black America and Canada, but I cannot claim that expertise.  What I can do is speak from my heart, and hopefully reach yours, and say that as I know better, I try to do better, I can say that it is an ongoing process, and one we can all take part in.  Racism, bigotry, and racial intolerance is one of the last unspoken taboos in our culture. We often are so uncomfortable with our history, we choose to ignore it.  We are more comfortable discussing sexual harassment, violence, and practically anything else in order to prevent us dealing with racial tension.

I selected the images and items to showcase in this post very carefully, for a variety of reasons. Some are obviously connected to Black History Month, featuring iconic images and persons, while other are less obviously so. As for the photographs, where some might only see the face of a black man or woman, I see the image, but also see the sameness in experience. Who hasn’t taken a picture of a young man about to ship off to war, of a family around a dinner table during the holiday time, or held on to pictures of their ancestors long after the names and connections have gone a bit fuzzy.  That is the beauty of Etsy, you can find the most amazing things, no matter what you are looking for.

In the United States they call their society “A Great Melting Pot”, in Canada, we call it “Multiculturalism”, in both cases, there are groups that remain marginalized for a variety of reasons, and that is our reality, and our failure.  Use this Black History Month to examine your own experiences, how can you do better for your family and by your neighbor.  I start with me, I can only change me, but I hope that by example I can show my young nieces and nephew that all people have value, no matter their colour, creed, or religion. We need to be a part of our community, and by extension our world, by interacting with others. We, each of us, need to develop an appreciation of our differences and dream of a day when no single person ever feels the sting of racism and ignorance again. Martin Luther King Jr. made the saying “I have a dream” famous, but each and every one of us should all have a dream of our own, and leave a legacy of love behind when we are gone, just like Martin Luther King Jr. did.

Fine Art Print – 5×7 – Hidden Gems by Aesha Ash, Swan Dreams – A Shop With A Cause on Etsy.

The image that heads this post, and the one above are the work of a very talented photographer named Aesha Ash, whose Etsy Shop “Swan Dreams – A Shop With A Cause” features many such beautiful images. The reason I wanted to leave a little special note at the bottom of this post, is because a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these stunning images goes towards organizations that endeavor to bring the beauty and benefits of ballet to children and youth in under-served communities. One of my nieces is currently studying classical ballet with a teacher who was herself trained in the exacting Russian Schools of Ballet. At first, my niece was having trouble with the strict attention to minor details and the constant correction of her form, but at some point, it clicked with her. She now sees constructive criticism as a means of making her better, of making her the best she can be.  For a nine-year old girl, I have seen the amazing effect that has had on everything else she does in her life, from daily homework to her downhill skiing, and it is a wonderful thing.  I find the work of the group that Aesha‘s work supports, The Swan Dreams Project, to be truly inspiring.  All children need to find the thing that makes life magical and beautiful, and teaches them to reach for the stars. Please follow the link to Aesha’s Etsy Shop to see more and learn how you can support this project.

Getting Under Your Skin – Wacky & Wonderful Wednesdays

Pocky iPhone 4, iPhone 4s Skin by Killer Duck Decals on Etsy.

Most of us have a love-hate relationship with our phones. We love being able to get information or contact others when we need to, yet at the same time, we hate having to carry these expensive little gadgets around and always be accessible to others.  There was a time before cell phones, yes kids, it’s true.

We once used these things called “pay phones” when we needed to get in touch on the go. We would actually sit in our cars and listen to the radio as we drove, or better yet, have a conversation with the people riding along with us.

Movie theaters didn’t have to remind us to turn our ring tones off, and no one’s wedding was interrupted by the ring of a phone. How did we survive without our phones? Quite nicely thank-you. On more then one occasion I have wished we could go back in time and never have invented the darn things, on others, I am glad to have them. So as I said, it’s a love hate thing.

Whether you love or hate your smartphone, e-reader, or tablet, they are in-fact an extension of your person.  If you are a generic person, you can throw your gadget into your purse or pocket and go. If you long to personalize and decorate your things and claim them as your own, there are a number of wonderful options for you, and many of them can be found on-line, go figure.

Skins are the easiest way to add a lot of personality without a lot of bulk, and they have the added attraction of being semi-permanent and removable, leaving no damage to the case.  You can find simple colored skins, or kitschy retro designs, some are artsy and quirky, and more still can be completely personalized.  Today’s Wacky & Wonderful post is all about getting your skins and making your phone your own.

Just because it is “the enemy” to some, and to others a treasured extension of their being, doesn’t mean it can’t be made more appealing. If you have to tote it about, you might as well like it.  You are less likely to confuse your phone with a friends if you have a unique skin on it, and it won’t get lost in a pile of gadgets on your desk if it is covered with one of these lovely skins.

I personally like the artsy styles, it’s nice to make something so high-tech look pretty at the same time.  I can definitely see the appeal of the geekery skins, there are oodles of Star Wars, Nintendo, Zombie Apocalypse, and other skins that are just hysterical. Some of these skins are just so smart, using textures or images that transform them into something else entirely. Whatever your personal taste, know that you can find just what you are looking for, or even have custom skins made featuring your initials or images of your loved ones.

Kiss Me Cate – Found On A Friday

Standard
Lacy by Cate Rangel

At last it’s Friday once again, and today’s Found featured artist is one who’s work speaks volumes all on it’s own. Which is a great thing for a variety of reasons, it has been a very busy blogging week for me, and I may need the help. I initially happened across the work of the astonishingly awesome Cate Rangel on Etsy, and I just knew I had to share it with everyone I could.

Daydream by Cate Rangel

Cate is among the small number of self-taught artists that I would place in the “Are You Kidding Me” category. What I mean by that is, her work displays such an unbelievable level of skill and style that it is hard to believe that she hasn’t been studying art her entire existence.  Her work is startling in it’s expressiveness, and her images will stay with you, almost call to you, as they did to me, asking you to come and have another look.

Culinary Curiosities by Cate Rangel

Based in Los Angeles, Cate’s paintings of primarily female subjects reflects what she describes as a “psychological mirror”.  While her formal education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Rangel’s work is a school in the elements of the feminine mystique.

Vera by Cate Rangel

Her portraits, of real or imagined subjects (it is sometimes difficult to be certain) are powerful in their apparent simplicity. They convey the “mix of boldness and fragility” that Cate herself identifies, but something more that is hard to describe in words.

Lilith by Cate Rangel

For me, art is all about the way it makes me feel, I know instantly whether I love something or if it not my ‘thing’. The moment I saw Rangel’s work, I was swimming in the pure joy of having connected.  Her work speaks to me, not only because of the subject matter, but the style as well. There is a haunting vulnerability in the eyes of these women, while at the same time, a sense of the power they possess.

Savannah by Kate Rangel

A mix of pop art, pin-up, fashion illustration, and expressionism, with an ample dose of Suicide Girl sexy, there is a stark beauty to each and every painting.  Working primarily in acrylic on panel, Cate’s skill is breathtakingly obvious, her images look like they are ready to come to life in some perfectly dark futuristic cyber-society or comic book, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find them in a local Tattoo Parlor either.

Kristen by Kate Rangel

You can select from a lovely selection prints, many Limited Edition in Cate Rangel’s Etsy shop, or visit her online store where you can find some of her original work alongside her prints.  On Etsy, prints range in price by size and edition availability, but generally start from $25 USD, while original paintings can be found beginning at $325 USD and up. Cate also has a website where you can see a large gallery of her work, her exhibiting calendar, and more.  Rangel also indicates in her Etsy shop information that some images not appearing in her store can be purchased as prints upon request, so I urge you to have a good look around. Aren’t you glad that Cate Rangel was Found On A Friday? I know I am.

Best Friends Forever – Sweetness Sundays

Standard
1.

We have all, at some time or other, been grateful for our true friends. Not just our acquaintances, but the people who know us sometimes even better than our own families do.  If you have a best friend, or several, you know that these relationships are very special. Sometimes these relationships start in childhood, others form later in life. Our best friends can be neighbors, sometimes they are actually family members, a close aged cousin or sibling, and sometimes they are even our spouses.  Whomever you call your best friend, make sure they know how very special they are to you. [All Item/Image Credits And Details Follow At Bottom of Post]

2.
3.
4.

We did it easily in childhood, we would ‘claim’ our best friends as such in front of classmates or contemporaries. We would hold their hands, share secrets, have sleepovers, and they would be the person we saved a seat for at the lunch table or at our birthday parties.  As adults, it is somewhat more difficult to express publicly our friendly affections without it feeling a bit odd, we may hug them hello or give them a quick squeeze when we say goodbye, but we often assume they understand how much they mean to us.

5.
6.
7.

Sometimes they do know, and that is perfectly wonderful. But no best friend ever complained that they heard too often how much they mattered in another persons life.  Often the times we most rely on these friends are the hardest moments in our lifetimes.  When we suffer the loss of a loved one, when we go through a trauma, when we end a significant relationship.  During those times, we are often not in a place to be aware just how much we are dependent on our very best friend.

8.
9.
10.

These are the people that make us laugh at ourselves and know just what to say to make us know they are happy just to be with us when we are miserable. Think about the last time you laughed till you cried, laughed so hard that your sides hurt and you doubled over, was it your best friend that made your sides split?

11.
12.
13.

Real friends would never complain of it being a burden, they understand that the nature of the best friend relationship is based in the reciprocity it allows. We are there for them when they need us, and they are there for us in our hard times, that is just the way it works, at least with true best friends. One-sided relationships are often exhausting and rarely last, but a true best friendship is one of the most sacred bonds we may ever know.  Therefore, today’s Sweetness Sundays post is dedicated to that sweet relationship known as the Best Friend.

14.
15.
16.

Children have become hooked on the term “BFF“, meaning Best Friends Forever. We can blame that lovely little bit of terminology to the likes of Paris Hilton, who popularized it on her TV reality show. Teens often refer to their best friends as “Besties“, I hear that term quite frequently from my neices. Adults tend to drop the “Best” part, we know who our closest friends are and don’t want to make any of our general acquaintance feel awkward by pointing it out.  Whatever we call them, whoever they are, make sure you make a point this Valentine’s Day of telling your best friend(s) that you love them.

17.
18.

Valentine’s Day, in my mind, is a day we celebrate love in all it’s forms, not merely romantic love.  We are expected to send cheesy cards to our spouse, partner, or significant other. Parents often remember their children on St. Valentine’s Day, and children often pepper their entire classroom full of peers with themed printed Valentine’s Day cards.  If you want to really show your friends you care, take a lesson from any parent of young children, there is nothing more precious than something hand-made with love and care.

19.
20.
21.

If you aren’t crafty, well that’s where the good news comes in, there are lots of people who are. You can find heaps of lovely best friend ‘themed’ gifts and cards on Etsy and other on-line sources.  Personally, I choose to feature Etsy vendors often because I find the process of shopping Etsy to be so simple. The descriptions are usually very clear, you can see what you are getting and the images are often so beautiful and attractive that you can get a real sense of the objects special qualities, and you can almost always pay securely by PayPal.  Today’s post is packed with amazing items celebrating the special friendships in our lives, and no matter what your age, you can never tell your friends enough just how much they are valued.

22.
23.
24

If your child has a best friend, or if you know a child that does, make sure you encourage them to acknowledge the relationship for how special it is.  We may have many best-friends throughout a lifetime, but the value of the relationship is a certainty.  Call your best friend today and tell them how much you care and how much they mean to you. Now isn’t that sweet?

It Can Be Munday Everyday – Strange Stuff Saturdays

Standard
SNORTING COKE

When I happened upon the Etsy shop called Boopsie Daisy I did a full-on double-take, and then another. Then I literally doubled over laughing. How can I express the absolute joy, retro-kitsch, colorful silliness that is the work of Missy Munday of Kelowna, British Columbia. It’s like some wonderful childhood dream, enchanted little dolls and creatures playing with everyday objects all on their own. It may seem to be utter silliness, but there is some serious skill involved in the astonishing Fine Art Prints created by Missy. Pay attention to the names of each print, they are just as brilliantly strange as the image itself.

DIRTY BERTIE
MACKIE
OLIVIA

Toys and characters that are so familiar juxtaposed with elements of nature, foodstuffs, and a myriad of pop-culture references make for a purely fun experience. Eye-popping colour and perfected lighting techniques make for the most amazing captures.  Some images are cute in there Kawaii kitschy-ness, others are evocative in their Sad-Eyed Style.  Then there are the images that seem to have vaguely hidden cultural commentary running through them, making them a tad bit disturbing.  Missy’s work is simply spectacular.

DIGGIN THE DOG
MY SUNDAE BATH
WETTY BOOP

All in all, the body of work displayed by Missy Munday is incredible. I can only image what her studio must look like, and how much fun she has combining crazy elements to create her day-glow bright visual feasts.  With close to 300 items in her shop, Boopsie Daisy on Etsy, I can only show you a very tiny sample of her wonderfully weird work.  Her Fine Art Prints feature all the elements I love in strange and odd creations, and some I didn’t even know I would like until I saw them.

SINFULLY SWEET

Make sure you visit Missy’s shop, Boopsie Daisy, and browse her work. You will laugh, you will do the double-take, and you will more then likely find a favorite from among her marvelously weird fantasy works.  Priced from just $4.00 USD for an ACEO Sized Image [Artist Trading Card] to  $55.00 USD for a Trio Set of 8″x12″ Prints, there is something for every budget.

Missy will create custom listings for you if the image you want is not listed in the size you are looking for, so just drop her a note. What a wonderful gift these prints would make for that oh so hard to buy for friend. You know this is one gift they will never forget. Oh how I love these Saturday posts. Have a strange and wonderful day.

Inconceivably Quotable Princess Bride – Wacky & Wonderful Wednesdays

Standard
The Princess Bride – As You Wish Poster by Amy McAdams-Gonzales, Amy McAdams Design on Etsy. 11’x17′ Print $25.00 USD.

There is a movie that holds perhaps the most amazingly quotable lines of dialogue in the history of cinema. It is so quotable, in fact, that often times individuals will use snippets of this brilliant script in their everyday speech without realizing it. For instance, someone recently asked me how I was feeling while I was in the grip of a nasty chest cold, my response “I’ve been mostly dead all day”. I laughed at myself, and then wondered if I did just unconscious quote The Princess Bride.

Inigo Montoya Card by Rakkadeer on Etsy. Print on Glossy Cardstock, 4.25″x5.5″, Envelope Included. $3.00 USD, T-Shirt Also Available.

The Princess Bride is literally a film for the whole family. Children love it, romantics love it, and the geek crowd adore it.  You have a lovely couple of actors in Cary Elwes and Robin Wright playing the romantic leads,  Wesley and Princess Buttercup. The charismatic Mandy Patinkin as the ever revenge quest fueled Inigo Montoya, and Billy Crystal as a  hysterically funny magic man are brilliant casting moves.  Who can forget adorable Fred Savage as the bed-bound grandson to the amazing Peter Falk, our narrator.

Love Is Many Things, None Of Them Logical – Princess Bride by Cassie Barentine, Chicky Lovit! on Etsy. 16″ or 18″ Snake Chain Included. $11.00 USD.

Wallace Shawn is utter perfection as the wicked Vizzini, who finds just about everything “inconceivable”. Sweet Andre the Giant fills the role of the gentle giant Fezzik, who is a loyal friend and who, despite his size, has the most gentle of souls. A bounty of silly baddies, and you have yourself a winning cast.  It is this motley collection of characters, and the brilliantly written script of William Goldman, in the hands of director Rob Reiner that makes The Princess Bride a winner on so many levels. You know a movie is one for the ages when you can watch it over and over and still find it wonderful every time.

The Princess Bride – A Classic Quote T-Shirt by Lauren Odell Usher, Upcycled Unlimited on Etsy. Screen Print on Second Hand Women’s Size L, $30.00 USD.

The quote worthy nature of this movie has not been lost on the fabulously creative crowd over at Etsy.  Today I present you a selection of items that celebrate this beloved film, it’s characters and dialogue, it’s sentiments and silliness.  Hooray for Wednesdays, and Happy “Humperdinck” Day everyone! [That is a ‘Princess Bride’ reference, and if you didn’t know that in an instant, Netflix it or load up the Blue Rays people!]
