Roller Derby Dreams [Part 1] – Wacky & Wonderful Wednesdays

Standard

OK girls, it’s time to fess up, how many of you have harbored dreams of Roller Derby stardom? I know I have. There is something so bad-ass about the women who Whip It. There seem fearless, fierce, and wild. At one time or another we have all wished we had a place to go, a secret life, where we were strong and powerful, where we had the camaraderie of kindred spirits, where we could let off some steam. We may never actually have the guts to do it, but we can all dream of a night of Roller Derby action. If you haven’t seen it, you need to have a girl’s night where you order up Drew Barrymore’s Whip It (2009) on your Netflix, and live vicariously. I promise you will love it, Ellen Page is brilliant and it is a girl-power fest.

Teeny Tiny Tuesdays – Itty Bitty Memories

Standard

As children, we have access to some of the smallest items we will ever hold. Dollhouse miniatures, little LEGO bits, that tiny stuff that popped out of gumball machines, even the little toys in our Cracker Jacks or Pink Elephant Popcorn. Tiny doll accessories, those little cars and trucks, and small beads and stickers that we manage to collect along the way. This is the stuff that we hold on to for a long time past childhood, often only tossing it when we have to move or we run out of drawer space. I had a drawer full of it, some items were stashed into my jewelry box, others sadly moved on to the trash bin. Those were the days before recycling, and also, I might note, the days before we became so hyper-aware of choking hazards.

Sometimes, just the sight of those tiny toys can send us hurtling back through memory lane, and holding them is even more powerful. But where can we find those things long lost and often forgot. Well, some of them are actually available in limited quantities and though they themselves may not be unique or handmade creations [the focus of this blog], they can be used to create more permanent and lasting items that are far more practical. Whether they are turned into jewelry, sculpture, art dolls, or something more is up to the artist, but finding those things no longer an impossible dream. Tiny Things Are Cute is a self described “emporium of little lovelies & wily whatnots”.

Some items are vintage, others new, and still others reproductions, but it is a great site to spend a little time looking around. It’s amazing how many time you will say, “Oh-Em-Gee, I had one of those!”. I am almost certain you will see something you forgot you once treasured, and it may be just the thing you need to re-charge your creative juices, no matter what type of crafty person you are. Here are a sampling of some of my favorite tiny things from the Online Shop, and this is a “Tiny” sampling in every sense of the word. Enjoy.

Items on Tiny Things Are Cute can be found in a variety of materials, including various metals, glass, and plastic. There is also a selection of vintage paper ephemera and toys. Items are divided into categories such as charms, one-of-a-kind, and seasonal finds. If you are a jewelry maker, you can also pick up some great “findings” and parts to help with your creations.

Item availability and quantities available vary depending on the item, particularly for vintage items. Please check Tiny Things Are Cute Website for current stock list and availability.

Perhaps the best deal of all, the “Jar O’Loot. A full 16 oz. grab bag of charms, beads, miniatures, toys, stickers, cabochons, findings, and more – most of which is vintage. Content is similar in each jar but each jar will be different. The surprise factor alone is pretty fabulous! Thank goodness for Teeny Tiny Tuesdays!

Wacky & Wonderful Wednesdays – Let The Games Begin

Standard

If you’ve read them, you get it. If you haven’t read them, what the heck are you waiting for? No, I am not talking about the *shudder* ever popular sparkling vampire meets girl meets wolf sappy teen pulp series that shall remain nameless, yes that one. I am talking about a series of books that redefines Teen Fiction as a genre, and doesn’t wrap up in the end with a shiny pink bow. I am speaking of The Hunger Games, the must-read three book series by Suzanne Collins that is soon to be a must-see movie scheduled for release in late March of 2012. Wednesday’s are all about the things that fall under the heading “geekery”, and today… book geeks shall rejoice!

I read, a lot, and I have read a lot of Teen Fictions. The Hunger Games is unlike any series of books I have read before, it presents a cruel vision of the future where the vast difference between the classes is for some, quite literally, a matter of life and death. Before this becomes a book review, something this blog is not about, I need to say that praise for these books, and the passionate following they have garnered is absolutely well placed. As I said to my 14 year old niece in a recent “book club” phone call, these books are not about happy endings, they are about reminding us to appreciate the good things in life, the people we love, and about the horrors of war.

They are not for everyone, particularly every teenager, but if you love The Hunger Games series, or love someone who does, you will understand the flourishing market for items that remind readers and fans of their heroes and the messages these books highlight. I would go further to say that handmade, one-of-a-kind [OOAK], and unique items are more likely to delight true fans of the books. Forget the licensed and mass marketed items that will no doubt be flooding stores soon. I believe Katniss Everdeen, the hero of The Hunger Games trilogy of books, would be the first to tell you that it is the rare finds that are often are the ones worth having.

This selection of Hunger Games inspired items would be a dream come true for any fan, and make a perfect Valentine’s gift or birthday present. This is a something that means something more than yet another mass produced something. That is a lot of somethings. Call it geekery, call it being a book nerd, say that it is fanatic fandom, but you just have to love someone who loves to read.

All items featured here were found on Etsy, and all details and links can be found at the end of this post. Whether you are a fan of the books or not, you can certainly appreciate the appeal of these beautiful, handmade, and OOAK items. Enjoy, and pick up a great book that you can get lost in today. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Wacky & Wonderful Wednesdays – Play With Your Geeks

Standard

It is Wednesday at last, the day we affectionately call “Hump Day”… but not too affectionately if you know what I mean. This is the day I get to let my geek flag fly proudly and show off some of the most awesome items that fall into the category lovingly labeled ‘Geekery’. I would refer you to the definition on Wikipedia, but that would be too nerdy even for me. Basically, this is the reclaiming of nerd culture, reveling in all things techie and intellectual, and a celebration of all those hyper obsessed with gadgetry, gaming, and collecting. These are my people, and I am willing to bet they are your people too. Everyone knows that geek is the new chic, and this is the day of the week that features all those fab objects of desire that celebrate the ‘in-jokes’, the ‘out there’ fun, and the suddenly celebrated ‘beyond’ the mainstream.

Ever wish you could carry your heroes in your laptop bag? Hold your icons in your hands? Have the cast of a favorite show share your cubicle with you? Well now you can, and I am going to tell you how, isn’t that magnanimous of me? If you mosey on over to Etsy and visit Paper Pal you can bring home your very own Steve Jobs paper-doll, fully assembled with articulated arms and legs. That’s right kids, for less than $9.00 USD/CAD you can have the ever inspiring late co-founder of Apple Inc. sit in your cubicle and help you make all those important decisions, like whether to use Google Chrome or stay with Firefox. Deep thoughts!

What if you could be a part of the cast of your favorite television workplace? Invite the cast of The Office over to your place and you can utter endlessly entertaining “Schrute-isms” and create as many awkward moments with Michael as possible, just imagine the possibilities. Hang this gang of four Paper Pals on your fridge [Dwight, Michael, Pam, and Jim] and let them watch over your Nutella Sandwiches.

Hope to LLAP? That would be “Live Long & Prosper” for all the non-Trekkie folks out there, as if? Spock can be your wing-man, set him up on your cars’ sun-visor and you can have him there to co-pilot your very own Enterprise. He’s a real ‘Babe Magnet’, if you like your ‘Babes’ geeky, and who doesn’t. Am I right?

For those of you more Star Wars inclined, as I myself am, you can face off with a Storm Trooper while brushing your teeth each morning. Tack one of these battle ready bad-boys to your bathroom mirror and you can turn your tooth brush into a Light Sabre and save the galaxy from the evil Empire, all before breakfast.

I admit I am having a little too much fun with this post perhaps, but you have to admit, these hand-drawn, handmade, and relatively inexpensive dolls are downright awesome. Designed by Izabela Stafford from Lomita, California, you can find these and so many more fab Paper Pals in her Etsy shop. Ranging from $8.00 to $10.00 USD per doll, you can grab up the cast of LOST, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, or take home Freddy Krueger or Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, there are so many ‘Pals’ to choose from. You can even get custom commissioned dolls made by Izabela of you or a friend for a very reasonable price considering it is an original hand-drawn work of art in the form of fun. Dash over to Paper Pals on Etsy to check out the fab geeky goods.
